AUBURN — Alex Golesh didn’t inherit a winning program when he became Auburn football‘s head coach in November. He was, however, bequeathed with talent.

Hugh Freeze, Golesh’s predecessor, didn’t leave the cupboard bare for whomever would wind up his successor, signing two consecutive top-10 recruiting classes and the eighth-best transfer portal class in the nation last offseason.

Auburn‘s roster, despite winning five games in 2025, positioned it favorably in a crowded coaching carousel. A complete rebuild wasn’t needed on the Plains, but Golesh was immediately tasked with figuring out how much of his first roster would be comprised of carry over. Few positions are more intriguing than the most important.

Golesh, who coached South Florida quarterback Byrum Brown to one of the most productive individual seasons in the sport’s history, adopted a quarterback room that included two former five-stars and a longtime Power 4 starter, leaving him with some “incredibly difficult” decisions to hash through.

“You’re trying to make a decision, and they’re to make a decision as well, right?” Golesh said Friday, Dec. 12, in a Next Round Live radio appearance. “I think that’s the biggest difference, is both sides have to make a decision and both sides have to grow a relationship really quickly here. That’s what I think is a little bit, whether you use the word fascinating or crazy. … We’re two weeks in, or close to two weeks in, and that’s probably as big of a conversation as you could imagine, on both sides of it.”

Golesh said Friday he has watched “every snap, probably no short of five times” of his current room. As it stands, that includes just Ashton Daniels and Deuce Knight, as Golesh’s staff encouraged Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold to explore his options in the transfer portal.

“I’ve gone back and watched film at the previous spot with Ashton,” Golesh said. “Shoot, I had Deuce at camp as a freshman, so I’ve got that memory, where I thought, ‘Man, this young man is going to be incredibly special.’ I still believe that.”

It follows what Golesh has expressed, saying earlier in the week his intention with Auburn’s quarterbacks was “not to blow the room up at all.”

“The one thing I will say is it’s a room full of really, really good dudes that want to get better, want to know what it’s going to take,” Golesh said Monday, Dec. 8. “When we’re done with, as fast as we can, this get-to-know phase, like, do we need to bring anybody else in? The intent for us is to have a one and a two and a three that are as talented as imaginably possible, but also bought into what we’re doing, also able to lead, also can functionally do it, to give us the opportunity to go win games.”
