Days after the University of Michigan fired its football coach, students and fans on campus said they are feeling surprised and disappointed, but not worried for the future of Michigan football.

Former Michigan coach Sherrone Moore was fired for cause on Wednesday, Dec. 10, and arraigned in an Washtenaw County court with a felony home invasion charge and two misdemeanors on Friday, Dec. 12.

U-M students Sadhu Rajesh and Sophia Bordin said they were in the middle of study sessions when they saw the news on Instagram. They said they were shocked by the news and the whole situation.

“It’s just insane. I think he had a really good life. A wife and college football is a huge deal, and I think he made a dumb decision," Bordin said.

Rajesh said she’s not too worried about the football team's upcoming bowl game or next season because Moore was the head coach for less than two years. He did recruit good talent, though, she said, and she's worried about players hitting the transfer portal.

"He was really good at that and now we don't have that," she said, adding that she's also concerned current players will leave.

Jack Gaffney was eating food at the Michigan Union when he heard the news. He said his initial reaction was “that’s tough” and feeling bad.

“I was very surprised. I didn’t think Sherrone would go crazy like that, but I feel bad for everyone,” Gaffney said.

He said he and others he knows are surprised but not worried for the rest of the season or for next year. When asked what he wants to see from the program in the future, he said "a coach doesn't sleep with someone on the staff."

Recent graduate Christian Nunez said he was going to sleep and a friend texted him about the surprising news.

"It’s just disappointing in general because (at) Michigan we pride ourselves not only for our excellence on the field but also off the field, so to hear that this has been going on is just disappointing as a fan," Nunez said.

Nunez said he hopes this situation doesn't define the athletic department and added that the school and football program can move forward from it.

“It’s good to remember that our actions define us, and it’s easy to remember the bad actions, but I think as Michigan, we make a lot of good actions, too, and we hold ourselves to a high standard," Nunez said. "That doesn’t happen all the time but I like to believe most (of) the time we hold ourselves to that high standard and we achieve that even though people don’t recognize it."
