Jacob Rodriguez Heisman vote totals, Texas Tech football media ballots

Texas Tech football standout Jacob Rodriguez received 17 first-place votes for the Heisman Trophy that was presented on Saturday, Dec. 14, to Fernando Mendoza, the quarterback of top-ranked Indiana.

Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia finished second, Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love third and Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin fourth. The four finalists appeared at the award ceremony in New York City.

The Heisman Trust announced the fifth- through 10th-place finishers on Thursday with Rodriguez finishing fifth. The Red Raiders‘ linebacker with 117 tackles, 7 forced fumbles and 4 interceptions had more than double the first-place votes than Sayin, but lost ground to Sayin in second- and third-place points.

Voting was conducted from a pool of 930 sportswriters and sportscasters nationwide, plus former Heisman winners.

Mendoza received 643 first-place votes and 2,362 points in the voting. Pavia had 189 first-place votes, the most second-place votes (352) and 1,435 points. Love earned 46 first-place votes, the most third-place votes (267) and 719 points.

Sayin had eight first-place votes and 432 points. Rodriguez finished with 295 points. Next behind Rodriguez was Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith with four first-place nods and 84 points.

Rodriguez’s fifth-place finish ties for third-highest among Texas Tech players. In 1965, running back Donny Anderson finished fourth. In 2008, quarterback Graham Harrell got fourth and wide receiver Michael Crabtree fifth.

Over the past week-plus, Rodriguez has won the Butkus Award that goes to the nation’s best linebacker, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy for the top defensive player, the Lombardi Award for the top lineman or linebacker and the Bednarik Award for the defensive player of the year. Rodriguez and Tech edge defender David Bailey also won the Pony Express Award, which originated in 2024 and honors the best tandem of teammates.
