Two years ago Indiana University was 3-9 and had more losses than any college football program in history. At the time, Fernando Mendoza V was struggling his way through his first year as a starter at Cal.
Now, Mendoza is a Heisman Trophy winner – the first in Indiana history.
Mendoza won the 2025 Heisman Trophy on Saturday. While he still has at least one more game to play this season, he has already achieved history in multiple ways for the Hoosiers.
Here are just a few of his highlights:
- A nation-leading 33 passing touchdowns (the most in Indiana history for one season), a Big Ten-leading 9.4 yards per pass attempt. 71.5% completion, 2,980 yards and a 181.4 passer rating.
- 13 wins as a starter – the most by any player in a single season in Indiana history
- The first Big Ten championship for Indiana and first Rose Bowl berth since 1967
Voting Results
The final balloting for the Heisman Trophy was released and Mendoza won it pretty decisively. Per the photo shared by Ralph D. Russo, he claimed 643 of the first-place votes and received a total of 2,362 points.
Coming in second was Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia with a respectable 189 first-place votes and 1,435 points. Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love came in third with 46 first-place votes and 719 points.

Rounding out the top-10 for vote getters were Georgia QB Gunner Stockton, Ole Miss QB Trinidad Chambliss, Ohio State safety Caleb Downs and Georgia Tech QB Haynes King.
Mendoza swept all five regions. Pavia came closest to him in the South but still lost that key voting block by 75 points.
At 13-0 on the season, Mendoza now leads the No. 1 team in the country into their first-ever College Football Playoff. Their next game will come in the Rose Bowl against the winner of the Oklahoma-Alabama game.
Mendoza has already delivered the first Heisman Trophy in school history. Can he finish this magical season with a first-ever national title too?
