Huskies destroy Broncos.
In the first Mountain West bowl game, it was pretty much the worst-case scenario for the Broncos. The defense started strong, but couldn’t contain the Huskies forever, especially when they got no help from the offense. It was the same struggles for Boise State in this game as their other losses this season. They couldn’t get the running game going (58 total rushing yards) and had awful quarterback play, throwing five picks between two quarterbacks. Boise State’s offense will now have all offseason to figure out how to be more consistent.
Nevada sports are struggling.
The Wolf Pack joined the Mountain West Conference with a competitive football team and a great basketball team. Currently, their sports are collectively struggling, having not won a fall sport conference championship since joining the MW. This year, five fall sports finished second-to-last in the conference. They have also seen three head coaches resign over the past two weeks, two of which don’t have other jobs lined up. We will see if their fortunes change in the new-look Mountain West next year.
Bowls that celebrate CFB’s uniqueness.
The Athletic took a look at a list of bowl games that contribute to making college football unique, and quite a few Mountain West ones make the list. The LA Bowl is a special mention (as is the Arizona Bowl) due to having specific people sponsoring it rather than a corporate sponsor. Then we see the Potato Bowl at #5 due to the blue turf and a french fry drenching that doesn’t require an outfit change afterward. Third place is the Hawaii Bowl, citing the culture and tradition over the commercial-driven approach of most others.
