As college football bowl games struggle to attract fan interest in the age of player (and even team) opt-outs, there’s one game that’s trying to increase attendance — and doing so for a good cause.
The first 2,000 fans to the Boca Raton Bowl between Louisville and Toledo on Dec. 23 will get in for free if they bring with them a can of Bush’s Beans, the game’s title sponsor. All cans of beans collected will then be donated to local families in need.
As part of the news release announcing the initiative, the company said it’s “recruiting fans to help transform Florida Atlantic University's Flagler Credit Union Stadium into the world's biggest bowl of baked beans,” which will include actor Keegan-Michael Key captaining “the audacious quest to make college football history with a never-before-seen moment.”
The Boca Raton Bowl was first played in 2014 and has cycled through several different sponsors. Last month, it unveiled Bush’s as its sponsor this year.
"Our bean obsession knows no bounds—that’s why we’re on a mission to turn the stadium into the biggest bowl of beans the world has seen,” Stephen Palacios, Bush’s senior vice president of marketing, said in a statement last month. “We invite fans to join us on our journey to elevate beans in every person’s life, so we’re stepping off the sidelines and calling the plays in Boca Raton with full-flavored fun, fan-fueled bean mayhem and a few trick plays up our sleeve.”
Fans were disappointed to learn that, unlike other bowl games with food-themed sponsors, the winning coach would not be doused with a tub full of baked beans. At the very least, though, some of those beans will be going to a worthy cause.
Louisville and Toledo enter the matchup with matching 8-4 records, though the Rockets are heading into the game without longtime head coach Jason Candle, who left the program after 10 seasons to accept the same position at UConn.
