Florida football sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway announced his intention to enter the transfer portal on Monday, December 15, ending and up-and-down stretch for the two-year starting UF quarterback.

The 6-foot-3, 247-pound Lagway went 10-9 as a starter, throwing for 28 TDs and 23 interceptions. More was expected from the 2023 Gatorade High School player of the year from Willis, Texas, but injuries between Lagway's freshman and sophomore year curtailed his development.

New Florida Gators coach Jon Sumrall and new UF offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner will now pivot in a different direction to find the leader of UF's offense. Faulkner has extensive experience in developing dual threat quarterbacks, including Georgia's Stetson Bennett and Georgia Tech's Haynes King, who passed for 2,697 yards and 12 TDs in 2025 while rushing for 922 yards and 15 TDs.

With Lagway's expected departure, here's a breakdown of how the quarterback depth chart could shake out for UF in 2026:

Florida football redshirt freshman QB Tramel Jones

The 6-foot-0, 203-pound Jones showed promise as a true freshman, completing 21 of 35 passes for 191 yards with 2 TDs while rushing for 2 yards.

By appearing in just two games, Jones preserved his redshirt season and has four years of eligibility remaining.

Florida football redshirt junior QB Aidan Warner

Warner didn't appear in a a game for the Gators in 2025, losing the backup quarterback spot to Jones during the offseason. But the 6-foot-3, 204-pound Warner appeared in six games with one start in 2024, completing 21-of-50 passes for 228-yards. Warner recorded one rushing TD in 2024 but threw for three interceptions.

Florida football incoming freshman QB Will Griffin

Griffin, a Tampa Jesuit High standout, earned Florida Gatorade High School player of the year honors after passing for more than 2,500 yards and 37 TDs in his senior season.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Griffin has passed for 143 TDs all-time in his high school career, which ranks second among Florida quarterbacks.

Transfer portal options

Florida could turn to the transfer to bring in another quarterback or two to provide competition and depth. Faulkner has a close relationship with Georgia Tech redshirt freshman backup quarterback Aaron Philo, who hasn't announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal yet, but could before portal window opens on Friday, Jan. 2.

In 2023, at Prince Avenue Christian School in Bogart, Ga., Philo broke the state record for passing yards previously held by Trevor Lawrence, passing for 13,922 yards. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Philo has shown promise as King's backup in two seasons with the Yellow Jackets, throwing for 938 yards with 2 TDs to 3 interceptions over two seasons while rushing for 95 yards and 1 TD.
