The Texas Tech football team is focused on the Orange Bowl, but the Red Raiders also have to start planning for the future beyond the College Football Playoff.
That includes starting to look at players to add through the transfer portal, which opens Jan. 2. Last year, Joey McGuire said he planned on adding about 10 guys from the portal. That number wound up in the 20s with many more — and far more talented — players joining the fold throughout December and into the spring portal window.
Quarterback was not a position McGuire thought Texas Tech would need to target in this year’s portal cycle, but Will Hammond’s torn ACL late in the season means the Red Raiders will be in the market for a new QB to replace Behren Morton, who wraps up his eligibility this season.
A number of quarterbacks have already made their intentions clear about entering the portal. One name stands out on Monday.
Could Cincinnati QB Brendan Sorsby transfer to the Texas Tech football team?
Three big-name quarterbacks are headed to the transfer portal as of Monday. Cincinnati’s Brendan Sorsby and Florida’s DJ Lagway have announced they will hit the portal while On3 reported that Patrick Mahomes cosplayer Dylan Raiola is also headed that way. On3 also reported that Texas Tech is unlikely to be pursuing Raiola, so you can take him out of the equation.
Sorsby is the hot name for Texas Tech right now. CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer reported on social media that the Red Raiders and Sorby’s previous school, Indiana, are two places where Sorsby could wind up.
The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Denton native accounted for 2,800 yards passing with 27 TDs and 5 interceptions and also ran for 580 yards and 9 TDs this past season for the Bearcats, who were in the mix to make the Big 12 Conference championship game until the last few weeks of the season.
Sorsby will also see what his NFL Draft stock is, keeping that option open as this year’s draft class lacks proven quarterbacks for NFL teams to choose from. That includes Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza, who is projected to be the top QB taken this year after an outstanding year with Indiana.
Sorsby is not currently projected to be a first-round pick but could see himself taken in the first few rounds if he decides to go pro.
Pros and cons of Texas Tech football adding Brendan Sorsby
Texas Tech will try to keep the momentum from this season going in 2026. To do that, it’ll need a veteran quarterback to lead the Red Raiders onto the field while Hammond works to get back to full strength.
Sorsby is a bigger quarterback whose ability and willingness to run with the ball are things that would work wonders in Mack Leftwich’s offense. Texas Tech hasn’t been able to use the QB run game this season with Morton’s mobility and injury issues.
Sorsby has also been consistent in his two years at Cincinnati, passing for 2,800 yards or more and running for about 500 yards and 9 TDs in each campaign.
In Sorsby’s announcement on Instagram, Terrance Carter Jr., Howard Sampson and Brice Pollock, all Texas Tech players who could return next season, interacted with the post, the subtle way for players to start their own pitches to fellow players.
Money will certainly be a factor with Sorby’s recruitment, whether that’s to keep him away from Indiana or get him to stay in college for one more year. But that’s never really been a problem for the likes of Cody Campbell and Texas Tech’s NIL war chest.
