South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer said wide receiver coach Mike Furrey will be the primary play-caller for the final three games of the 2025 season.
But the Gamecocks coach said the game plan will remain a group effort among all offensive coaches.
Beamer fired offensive coordinator Mike Shula on Nov. 2 after the Gamecocks (3-6, 1-6 SEC) picked up their sixth loss in the last seven games.
He explained on the SEC teleconference Nov. 5 that Furrey will just be “the main guy that’s talking to the quarterback and communicating the play to him on game day.”
South Carolina’s offense is last in the SEC in total yards (294.1), 15th in passing yards (193.3), last in rushing yards (108.8) and last in points (19.7) per game. Among 134 FBS teams, South Carolina is 129th in total offense and is one of nine teams averaging less than 300 total yards per game.
Beamer noted that Furrey has play-calling experience.
South Carolina is off in Week 11 and next plays at No. 3 Texas A&M on Nov. 15.
Who is Mike Furrey, South Carolina receivers coach?
Furrey joined South Carolina’s staff in February 2024, with last year his first season as wide receiver coach for the Gamecocks. Shortly after the season ended, Furrey was given the additional responsibility of “passing game coordinator,” the same day that Shula was hired as the next OC.
Before coming to Columbia, he spent two seasons as the head coach at Limestone University, a Division II school located in Gaffney, South Carolina, that has since shut down.
Furrey played a combined seven years in the NFL across three teams. He bounced between coaching at the college and NFL level, beginning with a head coaching job at Kentucky Christian University in 2011. He moved to wide receivers coach at Marshall before his first stint at Limestone from 2016-17.
He joined Matt Nagy’s staff in 2018 as Chicago Bears’ wide receivers coach for four years then went back to Limestone for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
