Howard head coach and former Tennessee Volunteers offensive coordinator Larry Scott is reportedly headed to Auburn to become Alex Golesh’s tight ends coach.
Scott, who turns 49 on Jan. 2, is 23-37 (12-15 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) in six seasons at Howard. He led the Bison to MEAC championships in 2022 and 2023, though Howard never had a winning record in his tenure. The Bison went 5-7 (2-3 in conference) this season.
CBS Sports initially reported Scott’s impending departure. Howard had not named an interim coach as of publication, nor had Auburn officially announced Scott’s hiring.
Although Scott and Golesh have shared ties to Tennessee and USF, they have not worked together previously. Scott played at USF and held various positions for the Bulls from 2006 through 2012, including coaching the tight ends (2007-08 and 2010-11), offensive line (2009), and running backs (2012). Golesh went 23-15 as USF’s head coach over the last three years.
Scott was Tennessee’s tight ends coach in 2016 and became the offensive coordinator one year later. Golesh spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons as the Volunteers’ offensive coordinator before becoming USF’s head coach.

“It’s going to continue to be what it has been here the last couple of years at the University of South Florida — an offensive staff that’s going to be absolutely elite,” Golesh said earlier this month. “The large chunk of which is coming with, and those guys will absolutely crush it offensively. … It’s as truly a collaborative effort as you can ever imagine.”
Auburn opens the 2026 season against Baylor in Atlanta. The Tigers have not won a bowl game since 2018 and have never reached the College Football Playoff.
