ESPN predicts the winner of Georgia football at Mississippi State

The Georgia Bulldogs play the Mississippi State Bulldogs at noon on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Mississippi. The Georgia-Mississippi State game will be televised on ESPN.

No. 5 Georgia (7-1, 5-1 SEC) plays in its third road game of the season against Mississippi State (5-4, 1-4 SEC), who is coming off their first SEC win in over two years. Last week, Georgia beat Florida 24-20 in a four quarter battle while Mississippi State overcame a 14-point deficit to beat Arkansas 38-35 on the road.

Mississippi State receiver Anthony Evans, a Georgia transfer, has been on of the top pass catchers in the SEC. Georgia has a major challenge trying to defend Evans along with his teammate Brenen Thompson. The Evans-Thompson duo has 93 receptions, 1,369 yards and 10 touchdowns combined this season.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart describes playing Mississippi State as a “great challenge” and knows UGA will need to play well in order to win and stay on path for making the College Football Playoff.

Georgia is 7 1/2-point road favorites against Mississippi State, so the Georgia-Mississippi State game is anticipated to be another close game for the Dawgs. ESPN analytics gives Mississippi State a decent chance of shocking Georgia. ESPN’s matchup predictor, which factors in how teams have performed, football power index (FPI) and other variables, gives Georgia a 78.7% chance to defeat Mississippi State, who has a 21.3% chance of beating Georgia.

ESPN gives Georgia a 85.1% chance of making the playoff. UGA has a 16.6% chance of winning the SEC (second in the conference behind Alabama) and a 6.8% chance of winning the national title (No. 6 in the country), according to FPI. Mississippi State has a 57.0% chance of winning six games to become bowl eligible.
