Jim Harbaugh says he’s still processing Sherrone Moore situation

Former Michigan football head coach Sherrone Moore rose to prominence, truly starting when he was hired by Jim Harbaugh to be the Wolverines' tight ends coach in 2018. After, he continued to ascend as a coach, going from tight ends to offensive line in 2021, he added co-offensive coordinator duties in 2022 (he got that title the year before), and then became the bona fide offensive coordinator in 2023, before being named the head coach with Jim Harbaugh's departure in 2024.

Moore was fired last week on Wednesday due to having an improper relationship with a staff member. While that in and of itself was notable, it was his ensuing crash out after that that really escalated the headlines. Moore reportedly broke into the staffer's residence after his firing and threatened to kill himself in front of her. He was since apprehended, arrested, and charged, and is facing the possibility of more than six years in prison and fines.

Last week, Harbaugh had little reaction to the news once he heard about it, but he gave a little more of a nuanced answer when he appeared on the Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday. That said, he still doesn't quite understand the news.

"I still don't have my head wrapped around it, Dan," Harbaugh said. "It's a tragedy, and just praying for all concerned. I love my alma mater, love Michigan, but I love the Chargers too. And I'd be doing a disservice if I wasn't putting all my focus on this game. This is the most important game for us."

Harbaugh says he hasn't spoken to Moore by voice since his firing, with early December being the last time. But he says they have exchanged texts, and the sense he gets from texting with his former assistant is that he's struggling amid the circumstances he put himself in.

"Just texts," Harbaugh said. "I think it's a tragedy. It's one of the worst days of his life. Keep it together and take care of your family, that's the message. Getting spiritual guidance is really critical."

Harbaugh says that he has no hand in helping Michigan find its next head coach.
