Why Alabama football's Germie Bernard is no fan of OU home-field lights

Having played in the Big Ten Conference with Michigan State, the Pac-12 Conference with Washington, and now in the SEC with Alabama, Germie Bernard has seen his share of college football stadiums.
Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium isn’t much different than a lot of them in terms of capacity, but in one respect, the Crimson Tide senior wide receiver’s first experience there was unique — uniquely difficult. That would be Alabama‘s 2024 game at OU, a 24-6 blowout that served to eliminate the Crimson Tide from College Football Playoff contention.
“Their lights kind of got me last time we played,” Bernard said. “The lights, they’re just kind of in a weird position I’d say.”
Lights aside, nothing else went right for the Alabama offense that night, either. Quarterback Jalen Milroe threw three interceptions, including a third-quarter pick-six that put the outcome out of reach. Bernard didn’t have a bad night in terms of production — four catches for 60 yards without a drop — but it was a brutal night for the team, as UA recorded just 234 yards of total offense.
Unfortunately for Bernard, those lights will be in the same place they were a year ago when UA and OU kick it off on Friday (7:30 p.m. CT, ABC/ESPN).
