N.C. State football running back Hollywood Smothers intends to enter the NCAA transfer portal.
CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz was first to report the news on Thursday, Dec. 18.
The decision comes after a breakout 2025 season in which Smothers emerged as one of the ACC’s most productive rushers. The redshirt sophomore led the league in rushing in 2025 with 160 carries for 939 yards and six touchdowns, with four games rushing for 100 or more yards. He finishes his Wolfpack career with 1,510 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns across 22 games played.
The Charlotte, North Carolina native started his career at Oklahoma before transferring to NC State following the 2023 season. He becomes the latest NC State player to announce their intentions to enter the portal alongside Justin Terrell, Josh Alexander-Felton and Valen Erickson.
The Wolfpack (7-5) finished the regular season with wins in three of its last four games and are set to face Memphis in the Gasparilla Bowl on Friday, Dec. 19 at 2:30 p.m. ET from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida.
The college football transfer portal officially opens Friday, Jan. 2, and closes Friday, Jan. 16.
