Predicting which QB Florida football grabs from the transfer portal

The college football transfer portal opens up on Jan. 2, 2026, setting loose a potent cohort of quarterbacks looking for a new home.
The Florida Gators figure to be major players for a new starter under center with the departure of DJ Lagway after two seasons in the Swamp. The program has swapped out an old-and-busted Billy Napier for a new-and-shiny Jon Sumrall at the head coach position and is looking to improve where the previous staff failed.
With that in mind, USA TODAY Sports writer Paul Myerberg took some time to evaluate the top quarterbacks in the upcoming transfer cycle, with Notre Dame Fighting Irish backup named as a possibility for the Orange and Blue.
"This would be a big leap for Minchey, who has the potential to be a Power Four starter but made just 29 attempts in three years at Notre Dame. He was very much in the offseason mix for the starting job that went to CJ Carr, though, missing out after Marcus Freeman went with the more traditional pocket passer.
"The Gators badly need help under center and would give their quarterback room a big upgrade by adding Minchey."
One cannot assume that Minchey would immediately take over the starting role, but rather, provide some stiff competition for Tramell Jones — who will likely be a redshirt freshman next season after appearing in just two games — as well as incoming four-star recruit Will Griffin.
Where DJ Lagway might land
As for Florida's departing signal-caller, Myerberg predicts that Lagway will land with the Baylor Bears — the same school his father played for.
"Lagway should get interest from LSU and new coach Lane Kiffin. If the opportunity is there, taking the reins of Kiffin’s system could be difficult to turn down. But Lagway’s hit-or-miss two years at Florida and high penchant for turnovers could scare off the Tigers and send him off to Baylor, which is about two hours northwest of his hometown of Willis, Texas," he notes.
"Baylor has a very quarterback-friendly scheme that helped turn former starter Sawyer Robertson into one of the nation’s most prolific passers."
We wish Lagway the best of luck wherever he lands.
