With the transfer season looming, Penn State appears set to lose another member of its roster. Offensive lineman Alex Birchmeier, a former prized recruit in Penn State’s Class of 2023, will reportedly be entering his name in the NCAA transfer portal database and make his move out of the program.
Birchmeier was the first player to commit to Penn State’s Class of 2023, doing so back in 2021. The Virginia native was among the top offensive linemen in the nation and was a massive addition to Penn State’s recruiting class. Unfortunately, Birchmeier’s playing time didn’t quite live up to expectations during his time with the Nittany Lions as he appeared mostly on special teams the last couple of seasons.
The NCAA transfer portal will be open from January 2 through January 16. Birchmeier will then be able to officially move to a new school if he so chooses. Being a top recruiting target of former head coach James Franklin and a Virginia native, it would seem that Virginia Tech would be a possible landing spot for Birchmeier out of the transfer portal.
Birchmeier is the fourth player from Penn State’s roster to decide to enter the transfer portal. He joins defensive lineman Chaz Coleman, cornerback Elliot Washington II, and tight end Joey Schlaffer.
