It’s been a great year for the Ohio State football program so far in 2025. While most teams would have been looking at rebuilding after losing 15 starters, the Buckeyes were able to reload and come just a play short of winning a Big Ten championship and going undefeated heading into the College Football Playoff.

As it is, the Buckeyes enter the CFP as the No. 2 seed and will look to repeat and defend their national championship from last season with a group of players that might be more talented than what the team had last season in what can only be considered the greatest run in college football history.

Because of all that, it’s no surprise that Ohio State had a slew of postseason All-Americans, so much so that it set or tied three program records for All-American notoriety. The program tied the school record with seven first-team All-Americans and set new records with three unanimous All-Americans and four combined unanimous/consensus All-Americans.

The unanimous All-Americans are safety Caleb Downs, defensive tackle Kayden McDonald, and wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, meaning all three appeared on all five publications recognized for consensus and unanimous consideration. Those five publications are the Associated Press, American Football Coaches Association, Football Writers Association of America, The Sporting News, and Walter Camp Foundation All-American teams. All three were first-team selections on all five lists.

Linebacker Arvell Reese was named on all first-team All-American squads aside from the FWAA team, in which he made the second team. His inclusion in at least three of the five first-team All-American teams makes it four consensus All-Americans in one year, setting a new OSU record.

Lastly, Caden Curry (On3), Carson Hinzman (AFCA), and Sonny Styles (Sporting News) all received first-team honors, pulling the team into a tie with the 1973 team with seven total All-Americans in one season. That’s quite the haul.

For historical context, Ohio State’s previous high for unanimous All-Americans was two (in 1970, 1973, 1987, 1995, 2016, and 2019), and for combined unanimous/consensus All-Americans was three (in 1944, 1969, 1974, 1995, 1996, 2002, and 2006).

With all of these mentions and awards, Ryan Day has to be feeling the pressure to bring home a CFP national championship because the level of talent on this team is being recognized from outside the program attaches a label of this Ohio State team being one of the most talented in program history.

Can the Buckeyes finish the deal? To do it, they’ll have to shake off the underwhelming offensive performance against Indiana last time out in the Big Ten Championship game. Ohio State will get to showcase its ability to go on another run beginning on New Year’s Eve in the Cotton Bowl against the winner of No. 7 seed Texas A&M and No. 10 seed Miami (FL).
