The 2025-26 College Football Playoff is finally here, and the OregonDucks couldn’t ask for a better position to be in. The 5-seeded Ducks will have a home game inside Autzen Stadium, where they will take on the 12-seeded James Madison Dukes, winners of the Sun Belt Conference. The winner moves on to the quarterfinals to play Texas Tech in the Orange Bowl on New Year’s Day.

But first things first.

Oregon needs to prevent a letdown similar to what it experienced in last season’s playoff, where the Ducks came out flat and lost the Rose Bowl to Ohio State. Although the layoff is about the same as that Rose Bowl, Oregon can take comfort in knowing it’ll be on friendly footing in Eugene and not to slight the Dukes in any way, but they aren’t Ohio State.

James Madison is 12-1 and won the Sun Belt, but on the whole, the level of competition isn’t the same as the Big Ten and if the Ducks are even close to being on their game, this contest should be wrapped up in the third quarter.

But games aren’t decided on paper and upsets do occur. If JMU is on its game and a few things break their way, this couldn’t be a lot closer than what the experts think. This is why it’s decided on the field.
