Washington Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota was evaluated for a concussion and was cleared against the Philadelphia Eagles. However, he is questionable to return to the game, due to an injury to his right hand, per the team.
Backup quarterback Josh Johnson will be Washington's go-to if Mariota cannot return to the game.
Mariota was slow to get up after an incompletion on third down that forced Washington to punt back to Philadelphia, and was evaluated in the medical tent following the play.
He jogged back to the locker room midway through the third quarter to be evaluated, leaving Johnson as the only quarterback on Washington's sideline. Quarterback Sam Hartman is on the practice squad, so he was unavailable to be the Commanders' designated emergency third quarterback.
Johnson took the field with 3:23 remaining in the third quarter after the Eagles took a 14-10 lead thanks to a 15-yard touchdown reception from Philadelphia tight end Dallas Goedert.
In his first possession at quarterback, Johnson converted a crucial third down on a 20-yard slant route to wide receiver Deebo Samuel to move the chains and extend Washington's drive.

However, he quickly threw away his progress, literally and figuratively, after he tossed an interception to Eagles cornerback Cooper DeJean while attempting to find Treylon Burks down the sideline.
DeJean returned the interception 11 yards to the Washington 37-yard line, to set up the Eagles with a short field.
