Zabien Brown knows what Alabama football is getting into at the Rose Bowl.
The Santa Ana, California native grew up about 40 miles south of the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California, a game he expects to be a homecoming for him and the handful of California natives on the Crimson Tide’s 2025 roster.
“I’m extremely excited,” Brown said after No. 9 Alabama‘s 34-24 win against No. 8 Oklahoma in the first round of the College Football Playoff. “Trying to eat up as much tickets as I can.”
Alabama has seen the Rose Bowl. The Crimson Tide has played in eight previous editions of the game, including a 27-20 overtime loss to Michigan in the CFP semifinal Jan. 1, 2024.
But the Crimson Tide’s opponent at the Rose Bowl will be brand new.
Here’s what you need to know about No. 1 Indiana before Alabama faces the Hoosiers Thursday, Jan. 1.
Indiana is led by a former Nick Saban staffer
Indiana is led by a familiar face to Crimson Tide fans.
Curt Cignetti, who has led the Hoosiers to a 24-2 record in his first two seasons as the team’s coach, spent Nick Saban’s first five seasons with Alabama football as his wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator from 2007-11.
With Alabama, Cignetti was a part of two BCS Championships. The Crimson Tide has a 55-12 record with Cignetti on staff, including an undefeated 2009 campaign
After Alabama, Cignetti was the head coach at IUP, Elon and James Madison before taking the Indiana job in 2024.
Alabama football is facing the 2025 Heisman Trophy winner
When Alabama sees Indiana, it will see the reigning Heisman Trophy winner.
Fernando Mendoza transferred from Cal to the Hoosiers and lit the Big Ten on fire, leading the Big Ten with 33 passing touchdowns and completing 71.5% of his pass attempts for 2,980 yards. With Mendoza at the helm, Indiana is undefeated, leading the Hoosiers to its first conference title since 1967.
Mendoza is the first Heisman winner Alabama has seen since LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels won the award in 2023.
Alabama has played in 13 games against Heisman winners in the season that the player won it, and have five wins: Daniels in 2023, against Kyler Murray and Oklahoma in the 2018 Sugar Bowl, against Vinny Testaverde and Miami in the 1993 Sugar Bowl, against Bo Jackson and Auburn in 1985 and against Pat Sullivan and Auburn in 1971.
Indiana has the best defense Alabama has faced
Indiana is easily the best defense Alabama has faced all season.
Led by defensive lineman Stephen Daley, who is expected to miss the rest of the season with a leg injury, linebacker Rolijah Hardy and defensive back Louis Moore, the Hoosiers have the second-best scoring defense in the country, allowing 10.8 points per game.
While Indiana has the 19th-best pass defense in the country ― an advantage for the Crimson Tide, which has the sixth-best pass defense nationally ― the Hoosiers allow 257.2 yards per game. Five teams in college football have a better mark.
Indiana has been stifling opposing run games, allowing 77.62 rushing yards per game and five rushing touchdowns in 13 games.
Alabama-Indiana is a brand new matchup on the football field
Alabama has never faced Indiana on the football field.
The 2026 Rose Bowl will be the first meeting between the Hoosier and the Crimson Tide. Indiana is the 13th Big Ten team the Crimson Tide has faced. Alabama has never played against Iowa, Northwestern, Oregon or Purdue.
Alabama men’s basketball has played Indiana once: a 67-62 loss to the Hoosiers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
