Missouri football hires Chip Lindsey as new offensive coordinator

Missouri football officially has a new playcaller.

The Tigers announced Sunday, Dec. 21, that they have hired Chip Lindsey from Michigan to replace Kirby Moore as the team’s offensive coordinator.

Lindsey, who, like MU head coach Eli Drinkwitz,  has spent time as an offensive assistant under Guz Malzahn, comes to the Tigers after one season as the playcaller in Ann Arbor for the Wolverines.

“We are excited to welcome Chip Lindsey to Mizzou to lead our offense,” Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz said in a news release. “He does a tremendous job of not only coaching and developing players but organizing and implementing the offense. He is an excellent offensive mind with wide range of experience from high school to offensive coordinator to college head coach. Chip is a tremendous addition to our coaching staff and someone who can seamlessly transition into the job.”

“I could not be happier to have the opportunity to work with Eli Drinkwitz in Columbia,” Lindsey said in the release. “What Coach Drinkwitz has done at Mizzou over that past six years is remarkable. You couple that with the commitment the University of Missouri has made to the football program, this is one of the most attractive coordinator jobs in the country. The commitment and infrastructure in place from an organizational standpoint and the talent on the field is truly exciting.”

Lindsey has been in coaching since 1997 and has been a college coach since 2010. He was the head coach at Troy from 2019-21.

The coach has also spent time as an offensive playcaller and quarterbacks coach at Southern Miss under Todd Monken, Arizona State under Todd Graham, Auburn and UCF under Malzahn and North Carolina under Mack Brown.

Drinkwitz recently said he was looking for a coordinator with playcalling experience. While the outside zone run scheme is going to be the staple of what Mizzou runs, Drinkwitz also indicated he is looking for a playcaller to come in and rejuvenate the Tigers’ passing game.

With true freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood at Michigan, Lindsey and the Wolverines had the No. 105-ranked passing offense in the FBS this season — four spots better than Missouri.

The Wolverines averaged 400 yards per game in 2025, which was good for No. 49 in the country.

Lindsey has helped develop several NFL quarterbacks during his times as a playcaller from Jarrett Stidham at Auburn, to Nick Mullens at Southern Miss to, most recently, Drake Maye at North Carolina.

Mizzou had an opening at offensive coordinator after Moore left the Tigers to become the head coach at Washington State. Lindsey is now the second offensive coordinator of the Drinkwitz era, as the head coach handed off playcalling duties after the 2023 season.

Michigan is currently searching for a new head coach after Sherrone Moore was fired for cause and arrested on felony charges of home invasion, stalking, and breaking and entering.

Drinkwitz had been touted as a potential candidate to fill the open role in Ann Arbor by some national media outlets. But, the Mizzou head coach recently signed a six-year extension through the 2031 season and no local outlets ever reported any concrete interest from Drinkwitz’s camp for the open UM job.

In Drinkwitz’s contract extension, the Tigers were given an extra $4 million to spend on their assistant and staff salary pool.

The details of Lindsey’s contract were not immediately available.

Before coaching at the college level, Lindsey was a longtime high school coach in Alabama and Georgia.

He is a Madison, Alabama, native who played wide receiver for North Alabama.
