Jacksonville State football will promote from within to replace offensive coordinator Clint Trickett.

The program announced Monday that tight ends coach Taylor Housewright will be made offensive coordinator. It was a quick search after Trickett left Wednesday to be the quarterback coach at Arkansas.

Housewright was most recently an analyst at Georgia Southern under Trickett before being hired by Charles Kelly to be apart of his first staff at Jacksonville State.

Housewright was the offensive coordinator at FCS power Montana State for 2021-23, developing quarterbacks Sean Chambers and Tommy Mellot, with Mellot earning the Walter Payton Award as the top offensive player in the FCS in 2024. During that stretch, his offenses scored more than 28 points per game, including a high of 42 points per game in 2022.

Housewright has previously been at Oregon and Mississippi State, both under Joe Moorhead. He played quarterback at Division II Ashland, where he was a finalist for the Harlon Hull Trophy, the MVP award for D2 football.

He started his coaching career at Miami (OH) before moving to Wittenberg, Ashland and Wyoming.

Trickett helped lead the Gamecocks to a 9-5 record and Salute to Veterans bowl win, a 17-13 victory over the Trojans. He lost his No. 1 offensive weapon, the nation’s leading rusher and Conference USA Player of the Year, Cam Cook for the game.

The Gamecocks had the nation’s fourth-ranked rushing attack at 258 yards per game with Trickett as the play caller. The Gamecocks averaged 28 points per game. Housewright should get key pieces like Cook and quarterback Caden Creel back along with some playmaking receivers like 6-foot-8 Deondre Johnson and could see Brock Rechsteiner return for a fifth season.
