With its Sugar Bowl opponent now locked in, Georgia football is turning up the preparations for its College Football Playoff quarterfinal game for a rematch with Ole Miss.
A question that will linger leading up to the Jan. 1 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans is whether starting Georgia defensive end Gabe Harris will be able to play.
Coach Kirby Smart confirmed on Monday, Dec. 22, that Harris is dealing with a turf toe injury.
“We’re hoping to have him available,” Smart said.
The CFP is releasing availability reports during game week, so Harris’ status will be more apparent then.
The 6-foot-4, 260-pound junior from Thomasville has started every game this season.
Harris is second on the team with 6.5 tackles for loss and fourth with 19 quarterback pressures to go along with 26 tackles and a sack.
His 443 snaps this season are the ninth-most on defense, according to Pro Football Focus.
Redshirt freshman Joseph Jonah-Ajonye is among those likely to see increased snaps if Harris can’t go.
Smart also provided an update on nickel back Joenel Augero, who was sidelined for the SEC Championship game with a wrist injury.
“Joenel is with us every day,” Smart said. “He’s trying to get healthy and get better and make himself available.”
