Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich has reportedly emerged as a “popular name” in the Michigan Wolverines’ coaching search.
FootballScoop’s Zach Barnett reported on Monday, Dec. 22, that the Michigan board is “fractured” on the current coaching search. Michigan fired head coach Sherrone Moore earlier this month with cause after an internal investigation found he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Moore was later detained by police as part of an investigation into an alleged assault in Pittsfield Township.
Barnett reported that the board is split into three factions, one of which prefers a “Michigan man.” Stenavich was an All-Big Ten offensive lineman at Michigan in the mid-2000s and later served as a graduate assistant.
Another faction reportedly prefers Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, who held the same role under former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Neither Minter nor Stenavich has been a head coach at any level.
Finally, a third faction wants a “respected outsider,” with Barnett citing former Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham as a potential candidate. The 66-year-old Whittingham had been with Utah since 1994, though he recently stepped down after 21 seasons.
What to Know About the Michigan Wolverines’ Coaching Search (Dec. 22 Update)
FootballScoop previously reported that Michigan officials have told players and their families that the school hopes to hire a new coach before Christmas. Michigan interim coach Biff Poggi said Monday that Manuel told the team that the school hopes to hire a coach before Michigan’s Citrus Bowl showdown with Texas on Dec. 31.
Poggi told reporters that he has had multiple interviews for the full-time position. Poggi went 6-16 in parts of two seasons at Charlotte, though he won both games while filling in for Moore earlier this year.
“It’s been five years of a malfunctioning organization,” Poggi said. “Let’s call it what it is. It’s happened every year. The athletic director doesn’t want any more of that.”
Michigan has previously dealt with a sign-stealing scandal, a recruiting violations case, and the firing of former offensive coordinator Matt Weiss amid allegations of computer crimes — including 14 counts of unauthorized access to computers and 10 counts of aggravated identity theft. Weiss pleaded not guilty earlier this year, and a judge blocked his motion to dismiss the aggravated identity theft counts on Monday.
