Texas A&M O-line coach is a candidate for OC job in the Big Ten

Texas A&M’s 2025 season ended in the first round of the College Football Playoff, as the Aggies failed to score a touchdown at Kyle Field for the first time since 2002, while starting quarterback Marcel Reed committed three turnovers, including two interceptions that ultimately led to the Aggies’ defeat against Miami, which will now face Ohio State in the Quarterfinal Round.

Head coach Mike Elko’s second season at the helm was a success despite the early exit from the CFP. While the narrative about the Aggies’ “soft” schedule isn’t far-fetched, the 2026 schedule is as demanding as it gets, facing LSU and Missouri on the road for the second straight season, and finishing the year with Oklahoma on the road and Texas at home.

However, Elko’s coaching staff will look a whole lot different next season, as Collin Klein, now Kansas State’s head coach, and Jay Bateman, who took a lateral move to Kentucky as the Wildcats’ defensive coordinator and playcaller, are officially in their new roles.

After elevating Lyle Hemphill to the new defensive coordinator and re-hiring Elijah Robinson as the co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach, Texas A&M’s run defense issues should be all but fixed next season. On the other side, second-year offensive line coach Adam Cushing has emerged as a candidate to follow Pat Fitzgerald to Michigan State.

Before Cushing was hired as Duke’s O-line coach during Mike Elko’s two-year head coach stint, Cushing served as Pat Fitzgerald’s O-line coach from 2009-2018, helping develop several former and current NFL offensive linemen. Just like Elijah Robinson, who will be focused on Texas A&M’s defensive line, Cushing could be offered a co-offensive coordinator job in addition to his offensive line duties.

Here’s what Spartans Wire’s Cory Linsner had to say about Cushing’s connection to the OC opening:

“For starters, his obvious connection and friendship with Fitzgerald makes this check a very big box. Now, a coach that has not yet worked as an offensive coordinator could be a concern, Cushing has learned under three outstanding offensive coordinators: Johns, Klein and Mick McCall. Michigan State needs to get back to being physical on offense, and adding another offensive line mind, who has been prepped for this role, would make a ton of sense.”

Cushing has never been an offensive coordinator/play caller, but has learned under Kevin Johns and Collin Klein. Texas A&M’s recruiting success and focus on building in the trenches could be derailed if Cushing leaves, but this is simply a rumor at this point.

Update: Michigan State will reportedly hire former Wake Forest offensive line coach Nick Tabacca, which likely removes Adam Cushing’s name from the list.
