The Michigan Wolverines have reportedly begun vetting former Georgia Bulldogs offensive coordinator Todd Monken, who is with the Baltimore Ravens, as a candidate in their head coaching search.
Monken, who turns 60 Feb. 5, is in his third season as the Ravens’ offensive coordinator. He spent three years with Kirby Smart at Georgia, helping the Bulldogs win national championships in 2021 and 2022.
FootballScoop’s John Brice and Doug Samuels shared on Wednesday, Dec. 24, that Michigan hopes to speak with Monken this week. Wolverines interim coach Biff Poggi, who has interviewed for the full-time position, said earlier this week that Michigan hopes to hire a coach between Dec. 25 and the team’s Citrus Bowl showdown with Texas Dec. 31.
Monken went 13-25 as Southern Miss’ head coach from 2013 through 2015, though the team improved from 1-11 in his first year to 9-5 in his final season. He earned Conference USA Coach of the Year honors in 2015 before jumping to the NFL and becoming Dirk Koetter’s offensive coordinator with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
More recently, Monken was a 2022 finalist for the Broyles Award, given annually to college football’s top assistant coach. Dallas Cowboys receiver George Pickens (No. 52, 2022), Buffalo Bills running back James Cook (No. 63, 2022), Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers (No. 13, 2024), and Los Angeles Chargers receiver Ladd McConkey (No. 34, 2024) are among the notable NFL players Monken coached at Georgia.
The Ravens reached the AFC Championship Game in Monken’s first season but lost in the Divisional Round last year. Baltimore posted a +260 point differential over those two seasons and is currently 7-8.
What to Know About the Michigan Wolverines’ Coaching Search (Dec. 24 Update)
Michigan fired head coach Sherrone Moore earlier this month with cause after an internal investigation found he engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Police later detained Moore as part of an investigation into an alleged assault in Pittsfield Township.
FootballScoop previously reported that the Michigan board is “fractured,” with some wanting a “respected outsider.” Although Monken has never coached at the University of Michigan, he has coached in the state. Monken was a graduate assistant at Grand Valley State from 1989-90 and worked at Eastern Michigan from 1993 through 1999.
Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich and Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter have both been linked to the Michigan job. Stenavich was an All-Big Ten offensive lineman at Michigan in the 2000s and later worked for the Wolverines as a graduate assistant.
Minter was the Wolverines’ defensive coordinator in 2022 and 2023, the latter of which ended in a national championship. Neither Minter nor Stenavich has been a head coach at any level.
FootballScoop added that Michigan representatives and Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm have had “preliminary talks.” Louisville went 9-4 this season and defeated Toledo in the Boca Raton Bowl on Tuesday. Brohm is 94-56 as a head coach at Western Kentucky (2014-16), Purdue (2017-22), and Louisville (2023 to present).
Additionally, FootballScoop reported that some at Michigan are interested in former Utah coach Kyle Whittingham, who has support “because of his program’s longstanding physicality, a healthy, winning culture and a background free of issues.” The 66-year-old Whittingham had been with Utah since 1994, though he recently stepped down after 21 seasons.
