The official announcement that Michigan football is hiring Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham to replace Sherrone Moore hasn’t even come yet, but there are now starting to be rumors about who might join his staff.
Whittingham had resigned from Utah, with the Las Vegas Bowl having previously been expected to be his final game. Now, it’s sounding more like he won’t coach in that game (that’s yet to be confirmed) and that he may pilfer some in the current Utes staff.
According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz, Whittingham may steal away current offensive coordinator Jason Beck.

Beck is closing out his first season as the Utes’ OC, and he has overseen the No. 6 offense nationally in Salt Lake City. He was the offensive coordinator at Syracuse and New Mexico before joining Whittingham’s staff this year.
But he’s not the only one that the new Michigan football head coach may steal away.
Though there are reports that Whittingham intends to retain much of the extant staff, it appears, also per Zenitz, that he is looking to steal away his rival (albeit his alma mater) BYU’s defensive coordinator, Jay Hill.

BYU, under Hill, also has the No. 28 defense nationally this season. The former head coach at Weber State, got his start in Whittingham’s first year as the head coach at Utah, yo-yoing between cornerbacks, tight ends, and running backs — along with being the team’s special teams coach — before he had his nine-year head coach tenure. He’s been with the Cougars since 2023, and had the No. 13 defense last year, improving upon the No. 109 defense his first year in Provo.
We’ll continue to monitor staff targets, hires, and retentions as the Whittingham era begins in Ann Arbor.
