Which young defenders led Penn State football to a Pinstripe Bowl win?

If Saturday was any indication, the future of Penn State football‘s defense under new head coach Matt Campbell is looking bright.

On a freezing, snowy Dec. 27 day in Yankee Stadium, the Penn State defense did what it does best by stifling Clemson to lead a 22-10 win in the Pinstripe Bowl. The Nittany Lions racked up four sacks, broke up a season-high eight passes and put Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik under pressure all afternoon.

But many of the defenders leading the Nittany Lions against Clemson weren’t perennial stars or leaders. Most of them were young backups with little previous playing time.

Redshirt freshman safety Vaboue Toure had just one tackle in his previous seven games. On Saturday, the redshirt freshman led the Lions with seven total tackles, including a sack to all but end the game while Clemson desperately tried to rally. Freshman Jahmir Joseph, who had not played since Nov. 1, was steadily impressive and more than doubled his regular season tackle total with five.

There were the returning leaders on the defense, of course. Dani Dennis-Sutton came in with two clutch sacks, and linebacker Amare Campbell tied Toure with seven tackles.

The vast majority of the work done against Clemson was done by players set to return next season, like Campbell and cornerback Zion Tracy, both juniors, and sophomore safety Dejuan Lane (Tracy and Lane both had five tackles).

Those are a few of the players coach Matt Campbell and his new, yet-to-be-named defensive coordinator will hope to keep in 2026.

They led a makeshift lineup that held Clemson to just 236 total yards of offense − the fewest a PSU defense had allowed since its win over Michigan State on Nov. 15. The Tigers were just 5-for-15 on third down.

For the first three quarters, the Nittany Lions were forced to rely on their defense, leading only 9-3.

Then defense that then ended the game on its terms.

The next season, in a sense, is already here, and it has promising look to it.
