The Colorado Buffaloes are "targeting" Fernando Lovo to be their next athletic director, according to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo. Lovo is currently in his first year as New Mexico's athletic director.
He has showcased his ability to make impressive hires in his limited time at New Mexico, hiring Jason Eck to lead the football program and Eric Olen to lead the basketball program. The football team went 9-4 under Eck, their most wins since 2016. Olen has done a great job keeping the program going after Richard Petino left, leading them to a 10-2 start as they look to make their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
Prior to his time in New Mexico, he served as Texas' executive senior associate athletics director for operations, a position he was promoted to in 2023 after serving in multiple roles after being hired in 2021. It was his second stint with the Longhorns, he was the chief of staff for football from 2016-21, a position he left to become the chief of staff for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
He started his career at Ohio State in 2012 as a football operations coordinator. He left in 2016 to become the assistant athletic director for football operations at Houston in 2015. He was there for two years before starting his first tenure with Texas in 2016.
Colorado is looking to replace longtime athletic director Rick George, who announced in November that he would be stepping down from his position at the end of the academic year. He has been their athletic director since 2013 and will become a special advisor to the chancellor and director of athletics emeritus.
