Ohio State delivered a major recruiting statement as it prepares for the postseason.

With the Buckeyes getting set for a College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup against the Miami Hurricanes later this week, coach Ryan Day landed a massive commitment Monday from five-star defensive end D.J. Jacobs, the nation’s top overall prospect in the 2027 class, according to 247Sports.

Jacobs, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound pass rusher from Roswell, Georgia, chose Ohio State Buckeyes over a loaded group of finalists that included Georgia, Miami, Texas A&M, Notre Dame and Oregon. If he signs during the 2027 cycle, Jacobs would become Ohio State’s highest-rated defensive signee since Jack Sawyer arrived as the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2021 class.

One of the most sought-after edge defenders in the country, Jacobs is ranked No. 11 overall in the ESPN Junior 300 and is ESPN’s top prospect in the state of Georgia. He is also considered the No. 5 overall defender nationally in the 2027 class.

Jacobs’ pledge provides a recruiting boost for Ohio State ahead of its Cotton Bowl showdown with Miami on Wednesday night, coming less than a month after the defending national champions suffered their first loss of the season to the Indiana Hoosiers in the Big Ten championship game.

A three-year starter at Blessed Trinity High School, Jacobs recorded 102 tackles and 16 sacks as a junior and has nearly 300 tackles in his varsity career. He is the son of former Georgia defensive tackle David Jacobs, and his godfather is former UGA and Miami coach Mark Richt.

Jacobs joins five-star wide receiver Jamier Brown as the headliners of Ohio State’s early 2027 class. The Buckeyes also closed the 2026 early signing period with ESPN’s ninth-ranked class, led by five-star receiver Chris Henry Jr., who is the son of late NFL star Chris Henry and has Adam 'Pacman' Jones as his advisor.
