Bill O’Brien fills out his final open staff position, hiring his former colleague Ted Roof as the new defensive coordinator. Roof previously worked with O’Brien at Penn State, Duke, and Georgia Tech so the two have a lot of familiarity. Roof was the DC at Georgia Tech as O’Brien was first moving up the ranks in his coaching career. The pair reunited at Duke, this time with Roof as the Head Coach bringing in the rising star O’Brien as the OC.
After taking over at Penn State, Billy O returned the favor, if you will, bringing on Roof as the DC. Roof’s defense ranked 2nd in the Big Ten in scoring defense, and led the conference in sacks and red zone defense. Roof stayed with O’Brien for just a season with the Nittany Lions before returning to his alma mater Georgia Tech as defensive coordinator.
Following a four-year run at Georgia Tech, the veteran defensive mind has bounced around with short stints at NC State, App State, Vandy, Clemson, Oklahoma, and most recently UCF in 2024. That’s quite a number of stops in a seven-year period, which raises a bit of a flag, but his results were generally solid. Overall, his familiarity with O’Brien should create better cohesion.
Roof’s most notable stop came with Auburn, where he was the defensive coordinator for 2011 National Championship side. This also won’t be his first stop in the great state of Massachusetts either. In the mid-90s, Roof coached defense for three seasons at UMass.
Roof replaces Tim Lewis, who was with the program for two seasons.
Welcome to the Heights, Coach Roof.
In other program news, as was reported yesterday running back Turbo Richard entered the portal. Right now, reports are also indicating Reed Harris may also be on his way out. The Montana native’s father played at Minnesota and coach PJ Fleck has created a great system showcasing his receivers. As with Richard, both players still have the opportunity to return to the program after ‘testing out the market.’ Hopefully, BC can pony up as needed to retain two star offensive players.
