A college football broadcasting giant is hanging up the microphone after the Sun Bowl in El Paso on New Year’s Eve.
Longtime announcer Gary Danielson will punctuate a 36-year career of calling games after Arizona State vs Duke alongside Brad Nessler. Danielson, who called his final Army vs Navy game on Dec. 13, has been part of CBS’ top college football broadcasting pair since 2006. He primarily called SEC games alongside Verne Lundquist until Lundquist’s retirement in 2016, and has been paired with Nessler since.
Danielson’s voice has long been a staple of the late afternoon slot. The six-time Emmy nominee took a lot of the criticism of a prime announcer slot, with nearly everyone believing he didn’t like their favorite team. But no one can argue Danielson hasn’t seen it all from the booth.
How long has Gary Danielson been announcing?
Danielson has been in college football broadcasting for 36 years.
His career started local in his hometown of Detroit. In 1990, ESPN selected him as the Saturday night color commentator. Danielson was with ESPN and ABC for 15 years, until he was tapped as the lead CBS analyst in 2006. Since then, Danielson has been a mainstay on CBS’ college football coverage.
While other networks would have games throughout the day, CBS has generally aired one, which Danielson would be in the booth for.
Who is replacing Gary Danielson?
Replacing Danielson will be Charles Davis, who will be in the booth alongside Nessler. Davis will be moving off of his NFL assignment as the No. 2 analyst alongside Ian Eagle, with JJ Watt primed to take his spot on Sundays.
