5th member of Missouri football '25 freshman class reportedly transferring

A fifth member of Missouri football’s 2025 freshman class is reportedly heading to the portal after one season on campus.

Mizzou true freshman safety CJ Bass III, who was a former four-star prospect out of East St. Louis High in the Class of 2025, will enter the transfer portal when it opens Jan. 2-16, according to a report Wednesday from Pete Nakos at On3.

Bass, who is listed at 6 foot 2 and 209 pounds, appeared in two games on defense for the Tigers in his rookie season, coming in nonconference games against Central Arkansas and UMass. He also took limited snaps on special teams in MU’s non-con slate, preserving a redshirt year.

He follows running backs Marquise Davis and Brendon Haygood, defensive end Javion Hilson and offensive lineman Henry Fenuku as the Mizzou true freshmen who will transfer after one season on campus. That is a little less than one-third of Mizzou’s 2025 signing class, which had 17 members.

There are now 15 total players from the Tigers who will enter the portal this offseason.

Mizzou will lose two of its top four safeties from the 2025 season to eligibility, as Daylan Carnell and Jalen Catalon each will graduate. In the middle of the season, reserve Caleb Flagg announced his plans to enter the portal and left the team.

Now without Bass, the Tigers have eight scholarship returners or true freshmen expected on the roster in 2026. That group includes likely starters Santana Banner and Marvin Burks Jr and role players Trajen Greco and Mose Phillips III.
