Wednesday, Dec. 31, marked the four-year anniversary of Aidan Hutchinson’s last appearance in the maize and blue.
Even though the Detroit Lions star pass rusher now plays 45 miles east of Ann Arbor, he acknowledges his connection to Michigan football isn’t as strong as it once was.
He certainly doesn’t know a lot about the Wolverines’ new coach, Kyle Whittingham. He admitted as much when a reporter asked for his reaction to the hiring of the longtime Utah coach.
“He seems like a cool dude from that first interview,” Hutchinson said. “Hoping he can go in there and bring some stability and a winning culture.”
Whittingham, who spent the past 32 years at Utah – including 21 seasons as coach, with a 177-88 record – takes over a program rocked Dec. 10 by the firing of his predecessor, Sherrone Moore, for an inappropriate relationship with a staffer.
Even as Hutchinson met with reporters Wednesday, Michigan faced Texas in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida. The Wolverineseventually lost, 41-27.
“I don’t know too many people left there,” Hutchinson said of his alma mater. “I’m curious what the new coaches they bring in, who they bring in. I’m curious if I know any of them.”
Along with everyone else, he’ll find out soon enough.
