PASADENA, Calif. — Alabama football is out West with its season on the line.
Quarterback Ty Simpson and the No. 9 Crimson Tide will take on No. 1 Indiana at the College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the 2026 Rose Bowl.
And Simpson will have a significant cheering section at Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California, including his father, Jason Simpson, the head coach at UT Martin.
Here’s what you need to know about Jason Simpson.
Jason Simpson has been the UT Martin football coach for 20 years
Jason Simpson has been a head football coach for the past 20 years.
Simpson became the UT Martin football coach in 2006 after spending three seasons as the offensive coordinator at Chattanooga.
In 20 years, Simpson has led UT Martin to three Ohio Valley Conference championships and two Big South OVC championships. He was OVC coach of the year in 2006.
In 20 years, Simpson has led UT Martin to a 129-96 record. The Skyhawks finished 6-6 in 2025.
How Jason Simpson attended Alabama vs Tennessee
Simpson has traveled to many Alabama football games in 2025. He was at the season opener against Florida State, and attended the Crimson Tide’s road win against South Carolina.
But Simpson garnered ample attention after he coached UT Martin to a 37-6 win against Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Oct. 18, in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, before attending Alabama vs. Tennessee in Tuscaloosa later that night.
Jason Simpson got on a plane his son and a group of what he called “awesome Bama alumni” arranged. By 5:30 p.m., Jason Simpson was at Bryant-Denny Stadium, watching Ty warm up, donning the same sideline apparel he’d worn during UT Martin’s third win of 2025 hours before.
