One of the players Rutgers football could least afford to lose is leaving.
Ian Strong, who developed into one of the top wide receivers in the Big Ten and a legitimate NFL prospect, announced on social media Jan. 1 that he plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal.
Strong this past season had 52 catches for 762 yards with five touchdowns in 10 games.
The 6-foot-3, 211-pound product of St. Anthony’s High School on Long Island was a go-to target for quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis. Strong was a high school teammate of KJ Duff, another Rutgers star receiver the Scarlet Knights can ill-afford to lose.
But in the modern era of college football, it’s never a guarantee that a player of Strong’s caliber will return.
The Scarlet Knights now will have to find a way to replace his production.
Strong will have one year of eligibility remaining.
