The Ohio State Buckeyes, after a crushing defeat in the College Football Playoffs quarterfinals to the Miami Hurricanes, were unable create any offensive momentum in the primetime matchup.

When asked about the play calling from Wednesday, head coach Ryan Day told reporters after the contest that he needs to “look at it all.”

"I gotta look at it all and figure out what that was and what that is, because it's not good enough,” Day stated. “So, look at it all."

Coming into this year, the Buckeyes’ offense was under the control of former offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Brian Hartline.

This would ultimately change shortly after Hartline accepted the head coach position for the USF Bulls, and his final game as the team’s play caller would be against the Indiana Hoosiers in the Big 10 Conference Championship Game.

With Day taking over play-calling duties, many fans hoped that the offense would create some magic against the Hurricanes, but this was far from the case. Ohio State finished with more offensive yards than Miami, but the unit as a whole managed to score 14 points on Wednesday night.

In addition to the offensive struggles, redshirt freshman quarterback Julian Sayin was unable to overcome the Hurricanes’ stout defense. However, Day still gave high praise to his young playmaker, telling reporters that he has a “very, very bright future ahead of him.”

For Julian, this is somebody who hasn't played a lot of football, and he competes,” Day claimed. “This guy right here has a very, very bright future ahead of him…now he's gotta learn from this."

Sayin finished the night completing 22 of his 35 pass attempts for 287 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. The 2025 Heisman Finalist was sacked five times, and the Hurricanes’ defense took advantage of Sayin’s inexperience in prime time matchups.

While Sayin struggled through the air, the Buckeyes’ run game could not manufacture any sort of production on the ground. Freshman running back Bo Jackson ended the contest with 11 carries for 55 yards and one touchdown, but the lack of support early in the matchup played a key role in the offensive struggles.

Now, Ohio State must completely tear down the offense from the 2025 season and revamp the unit for next season.
