SWEET REVENGE: Ole Miss upsets Georgia to advance to CFP Semifinals

Trinidad Chambliss and Ole Miss are now the biggest story in college football after an upset of No. 3 Georgia in the Sugar Bowl to advance to the College Football Playoff semifinals.

The No. 6 Rebels (13-1) overcame a 21-12 halftime deficit with some unbelievable play from Chambliss and a clutch field goal from Lucas Carneiro in the final seconds of the game to win, 39-34. Chambliss went 30/46 passing for 362 yards and two touchdowns as the Rebels used a 20-10 margin in the fourth quarter to put the game on ice.

This is not a game Georgia (12-2) loses entering the fourth quarter with a lead. In fact, it was the first game in 76 tries that a team defeated the Bulldogs when it had the lead going into the fourth quarter. SEVENTY SIX FOLKS THATS SPECIAL.

There will probably be some children conceived in Mississippi tonight who will be named Lucas. The sophomore placekicker Carneiro converted a 47-yard field goal with six seconds remaining to make it 37-34, but he set the Sugar Bowl record for longest field goal twice in the first quarter with a 55-yard kick then a 56-yarder shortly after to set and reset the record.

The Ole Miss defense held Georgia to 343 offensive yards including 124 rushing yards at only a 3.4 yards per attempt average. This is one of the big differences from the first version of this game with the defense stalling Georgia when it mattered most and holding Gunnar Stockton to just over 200 yards passing.

Kewan Lacy led all rushers for the Rebels with 98 yards and two touchdowns. Lacy had what seemed to be a gamechanging fumble in the first half that was returned for a Georgia touchdown, but the sophomore RB just seemed to get stronger as the game went on. The determination of this team and the mental toughness shone through the most mounting a comeback against one of the most talented teams in the country.

From the wide receiver room, Trey Wallace led the way with nine catches for 156 yards and a touchdown. De’Zhaun Stribling also flexed on the shorthanded Bulldog secondary with seven catches for 122 yards.

Truly, this Thursday night was one of the biggest wins in Ole Miss football history. A seventh Sugar Bowl championship second best all time for the Rebels is just some additional icing on the cake.

It’s now one week until a showdown with No. 10 Miami in the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz. HOTTY DAMN TODDY CHEERS!
