The college football transfer portal officially opened at midnight on Jan. 2. Right after the portal opened, as many as 450 players had entered in a matter of minutes.
For the past month, players had revealed their intentions to enter the portal, but they could not officially do so until the clock struck midnight ET on Friday.
There should be plenty of movement, especially after a busy coaching carousel. One team worth watching is the Penn State Nittany Lions, who hired Iowa State’s Matt Campbell as its new head coach after James Franklin was fired, and then went on to become the Virginia Tech Hokies’ new coach.
Right after the portal opened, a prediction surfaced for Penn State to land one of the top quarterbacks in the cycle: Iowa State’s Rocco Becht.
Pete Nakos of On3 predicted Penn State to land Becht with a confidence level of 60%.
And, Pete Thamel of ESPN reported that Becht is planning a visit to Penn State.
“Former Iowa State QB Rocco Becht tells ESPN he’s preparing to visit Penn State in the upcoming days. Now that he’ll officially be in the portal, a deal at Penn State reuniting him with his former coaching staff could come together quickly.”

Becht committed to Iowa State in April of 2021 and has spent four seasons at Ames with the Cyclones and Campbell.
On3 has Becht with an NIL valuation of $1.4 million, and he is expected to be one of the premier signal-callers in the portal.
Campbell was named Penn State’s head coach at the start of December, and Becht announced he would enter the portal on December 20, so it’s not a surprise to see him linked to Penn State.
In 2025, Becht threw for 2,584 yards with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions, and in 2024, he had 3,505 yards with 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Former Penn State QB Ethan Grunkemeyer revealed he would enter the portal, so Becht could come in and immediately be the starter for the Nittany Lions.
