Ole Miss has reached the College Football Playoff semifinals without Lane Kiffin, and it may have to endure another coaching exodus before this run is up. Six Ole Miss assistants who are following Kiffin to LSU could potentially leave the Rebels before the Fiesta Bowl against Miami, according to Yahoo Sports.
Nothing is set in stone, but even Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter spoke ominously of the coaching situation after the Rebels' huge Sugar Bowl win over Georgia.
"I don’t know," Carter told Ross Dellenger. "We’re going to celebrate tonight and get ready for Arizona in the morning."
The assistants in question are offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr., tight ends coach Joe Cox, wide receivers coach George McDonald, running backs coach Kevin Smith, senior analyst Dane Stevens and graduate assistant Sawyer Jordan. All of them coach offense, so their departure would be a huge obstacle for Trinidad Chambliss and Co. to overcome.
But if any team can survive this, it's this one. Ole Miss has shown incredible resilience under Pete Golding, the defensive coordinator who took over as head coach following Kiffin's move to LSU. Apparently the two have an understanding for what comes next.
"Everything has been extremely clear and transparent between myself and Pete Golding through constant communication, including a plan all the way through this historic championship run," Kiffin told ESPN. "What an amazing night for all Ole Miss players, coaches and fans."
If Ole Miss can knock off Miami, it'll play for a national title for the first time since 1962. With all the drama that's swirled around Oxford this season, what a story that would be.
