Mbakwe becomes the second Crimson Tide player of the day to announce his intention to enter the portal, adding another layer to what has already been an active stretch for Alabama during the portal window. On3 also announced earlier today that Alabama Crimson Tide RB Richard Young was entering the portal.
Mbakwe's decision is notable not just because of his talent, but because of how unexpected it appears given recent comments about his future in Tuscaloosa.
An Alabama native and former five-star prospect, Mbakwe arrived at Alabama as part of the 2024 recruiting class with sky-high expectations. He was viewed as one of the most versatile athletes in the state, capable of making an impact on either side of the ball. That versatility ultimately defined much of his time with the Crimson Tide.
Mbakwe spent two seasons in Tuscaloosa and made a position change from defensive back to wide receiver in an effort to find a clearer path to playing time. While opportunities were limited, he showed flashes of potential in his new role, finishing his Alabama career with 55 receiving yards. The production never fully matched the hype that followed him out of high school, but the raw talent that made him a five-star recruit remains evident.
What makes the news more surprising is Mbakwe’s stance just weeks ago. When asked in December whether he would consider entering the transfer portal following the season, Mbakwe responded with a firm “definitely not.” At the time, it appeared he was committed to continuing his development within Alabama’s system.
However, with competition in Alabama’s wide receiver room remaining intense and roster movement beginning to take shape, Mbakwe now appears ready for a fresh start elsewhere. His departure represents another example of how quickly circumstances can change in the modern college football landscape.
As Alabama navigates portal season, Mbakwe’s decision marks a noteworthy exit, one that underscores both the challenges of earning a role in Tuscaloosa and the ever-evolving nature of roster building in the transfer portal era.
