MANHATTAN — There was no shortage of news for Kansas State football when the transfer portal window opened on Jan. 2.

The Wildcats will return starting quarterback Avery Johnson and cornerback Zaschon Rich, the two announced on Friday, giving them two key players heading into the 2026 season.

Collin Klein is now tasked with filling a ton of other roster spots, hoping to take advantage of having two of his top players back in Manhattan. The Wildcats were connected to a handful of names, with some expected to visit Kansas State over the next week or so.

Here were those who made their names known on the portal’s opening day as potential future Wildcats.

Mekhi Mason, Louisiana Tech, LB

Matt Zenitz of 247Sports said Mason has set up a visit with Kansas State. He was an All-Conference USA linebacker last season with 68 tackles, including 14.5 for a loss.

Caden Marshall, Bowling Green, LB

Marshall said K-State offered him after his redshirt freshman season. Marshall started six games and made 38 tackles across eight for the Falcons. He has a visit lined up at SMU on Jan. 5 and will visit Manhattan Jan. 7-8.

Chris Jones, Southern Miss, LB

Jones, not the Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman, is one of the more coveted linebackers in the portal. He said he has an offer from Kansas State and has been connected to the Wildcats for over a week, but On3 reported that Ole Miss and Florida State are emerging as the favorites to land him.

Paul Bowling, Troy, OL

Bowling received an offer from Kansas State on Jan. 2. The interior offensive lineman started 12 games as a true freshman at Troy in 2025 and was named to the Pro Football Focus All-Freshman team. He lists himself at 6-foot-4, 315 pounds.

Charlie Adams, Cal Poly, OL

247Sports’ Chris Hummer reported that Adams will visit Kansas State on Jan. 3. The 6-foot-4, 305-pound tackle is coming off a sophomore year in which he didn’t allow a sack.

Rodney Fields, Oklahoma State, RB

Fields Jr. became a name for Kansas State to watch after he announced on Jan. 2 that he would enter the portal. Fields averaged five yards per carry as a redshirt freshman for the Cowboys last season. Why is K-State a team to watch? New Wildcats running backs coach Cory Patterson was Oklahoma State’s running backs coach last season.

De’Arieun Hicks, Garner-Webb, DL

Zenitz reported on Jan. 1 that Hicks will visit Manhattan on Saturday and Iowa State on Monday. At 6-foot-4, 285 pounds, Hicks had 21 tackles and 4.5 for a loss in 2025.

Bill Davis, Louisiana, RB

Jamarcus Fitzpatrick, a Louisiana television reporter, said Davis will visit Virginia Tech on Jan. 3, but K-State is also working to set up a visit. He rushed for 739 yards and six touchdowns in 2025.

Ian Foster, Southern Miss, S

K-State offered the safety, who made 75 total tackles and three interceptions this past season.

Javon Davis, McNeese, CB

Hummer reported that the Wildcats have been in contact with Davis, a 6-foot corner who had 36 tackles, three interceptions and eight passes defended this year.

Malachi Preciado, South Alabama, C

The Wildcats offered the 6-foot-2, 294-pound center from South Alabama, who has started the last two seasons for South Alabama in the Sun Belt. He allowed nine pressures and one sack in 2025, while Pro Football Focus gave him a 60.5 run block grade.
