CHARLOTTE, NC — Brenen Thompson has broken a Mississippi State football receiving yards record.
His 15-yard catch in the fourth quarter of the Duke's Mayo Bowl against Wake Forest on Jan. 2 gave him 1,054 yards this season, breaking the program's single-season record.
Makai Polk was the record holder with 1,046 yards in 2021.
The Bulldogs (5-7) scored a touchdown on that drive to cut Wake Forest's lead to 30-27 at Bank of America Stadium. It was Thompson's fourth catch of the game for 106 yards.
He also became the fourth wide receiver in program history to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards. He was at 948 yards entering the game.
Thompson had three games of 100 yards or more in the regular season against Arizona State, Florida and Arkansas. The Arizona State game was perhaps his best, when he had six catches, 133 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner.
Thompson transferred to MSU this season after two seasons at Oklahoma. The senior from Spearman, Texas played his freshman season at Texas in 2022.
