UTSA cornerback Davin Martin pledges to Texas Tech football

The Texas Tech football team added help for the secondary via the NCAA transfer portal, picking up cornerback Davin Martin from UT-San Antonio on Monday, Jan. 5. On3 Sports first reported his pledge.

Martin, listed by UTSA as 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, played in 11 games this season, making eight starts, as a redshirt sophomore. He was credited with 26 tackles, including two tackles for loss. He also had two pass breakups and an interception.

The Roadrunners went 7-6, beating Florida International 57-20 in the First Responder Bowl.

Martin spent three seasons at UTSA after signing out of Klein Cain, where he was first-team all-District 16-5A as a senior in 2022. In his first two years at UTSA, he played in 18 games, starting two, and was credited with 14 tackles.

What UTSA transfer Davin Martin brings to the Texas Tech football team

Martin fits the profile of what Texas Tech’s personnel staff seeks out in a cornerback with size and length. He’s similar in that regard to Brice Pollock, Amier Boyd and Dontae Balfour, the three corners whom the Red Raiders used most this season after each arrived from the transfer portal last year at this time.

Pollock and Boyd each have a year of eligibility left. Assuming those two don’t turn pro, they’re likely starters next season, so Martin could take a role in the rotation and provide depth, as well as being a special-teams piece.

Martin is the first defensive back Texas Tech has added from the portal this cycle, which runs from Jan. 2-16.
