Two-time all-MWC pass rusher Trey White commits to Texas Tech football

The Texas Tech football team dramatically improved its past rush last offseason by mining the NCAA transfer portal, and the Red Raiders need to execute the same strategy again.

The Red Raiders added an experienced, proven pass rusher on Monday, Jan. 5. San Diego State edge defender Trey White, a two-time first-team all-Mountain West Conference honoree by coaches, told On3 Sports he’s committed to Texas Tech.

White, in his fourth year at San Diego State, was credited with 53 tackles, including 10 1/2 tackles for loss and 7 sacks this season. He had 17 quarterback hurries, operating as a key cog for a 9-4 team that lost to North Texas 49-47 in the New Mexico Bowl.

White is listed by San Diego State as 6-foot-2 and 255 pounds. He had an even bigger year as a sophomore in 2024, when he was credited with 60 tackles, 18 1/2 tackles for loss, 12 1/2 sacks and 2 pass breakups.

He went to Chula Vista (Calif.) Eastlake High School.

The ability to pressure the passer was a key reason Texas Tech went 12-2 this season, winning its first Big 12 title and making the College Football Playoff. Edge defenders David Bailey and Romello Height racked up 14 1/2 and 9 1/2 sacks, respectively, helping Tech rank among the top 10 in the FBS with 41 sacks.

However, Bailey and Height are out of eligibility. So are their top backups, Charles Esters III and Terrell Tilmon. That’s not to mention three of the team’s most promising young edges, Braylon Rigsby, Dylan Spencer and Cheta Ofili, have their names in the transfer portal.

White addresses a pressing need and profiles as an immediate starter.
