Were Ohio State’s play-calling changes entering the College Football Playoff a downfall in the Cotton Bowl? Former Buckeyes coach coach Urban Meyer does not think so.

On “The Triple Option” podcast Jan. 5 with former running back Mark Ingram and FOX Sports commentator Rob Stone, Meyer discussed the buzz around Buckeyes coach Ryan Day taking play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Brian Hartline, who was named the South Florida football coach before the Big Ten championship game.

“I say this because it’s a very serious position. … The head coach is going to be involved in every play,” Meyer said. “Who’s calling plays at that point I think it’s important, but I think at times it’s a little bit overrated as well.”

After Ohio State’s 13-10 loss to Indiana on Dec. 6, Day announced he would take over play-calling after originally stating Hartline would retain the role for the remainder of the CFP. In the Cotton Bowl, the Buckeyes were held scoreless in the first half, scoring only two touchdowns in the second half to lose 24-14.

“Here’s the issue: You got your a– kicked at the line of scrimmage the last two games,” Meyer said.

Against the Miami and Indiana defensive lines, Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin was sacked five times each after being sacked six times total in the regular season.
