Jeff Urban steps down as Somerset head football coach after 4 seasons

Somerset football is in need of a new head coach. After four seasons as head coach, and 30 years within the program, Jeff Urban has stepped down, according to a release by Somerset Athletic Director Scott Close, Thursday, Nov. 6.

The Golden Eagles went 2-8 in 2025 and 10-32 overall under Urban.

Urban played for Somerset in the mid-1980s. He coached at various levels for the Golden Eagles for more than 20 years. Urban started the Somerset youth football program in the ’90s. He coached junior high football in 1998 before entering the Pennsylvania State Police Academy.

He returned to coaching in 2007 at the junior high level. Urban moved to the varsity staff in 2011. He was on former coach Bob Landis’ staff when Somerset advanced to the PIAA Class 3A semifinals in 2014. Urban eventually took over for Brian Basile as head coach in March of 2022. Urban was a part of Somerset’s first district championship and led the program to its second district crown in 2024.

“I want to thank all of the current and past players and coaches for their time and commitment to the program,” Urban said via the release. “I also thank the school district for the opportunity to serve as an assistant and the varsity head football coach. In addition, I thank the community for their continued support of the Somerset football program and student athletes.”

Somerset football coach Jeff Urban has stepped down after four seasons at the helm of the Golden Eagles.

He credits assistant coach and physical education teacher, Kelby Hay, who helped increase the student interest in the program and bring stability back. Urban takes pride in the fact that many members of the state semifinalist team came back to help coach, including Brock Leazier, George Coyle, Jake Heiple and Raven Beeman.

“Somerset is thankful for all of the years and effort that Jeff has given the student athletes,” Close said in the release. “He brought a level of commitment and integrity that I personally appreciated. His passion for this program could never be questioned.”

Somerset will begin a search for its new head coach in the upcoming weeks.
