While there is no denying that Colorado has had a tremendous start to this year’s portal cycle, the need for aggressiveness stems from the Buffs‘ having over 30 departures from last year’s roster.
Those departures include stars like Omarion Miller and Tawfiq Byard, who have already found new homes at Arizona State and Texas A&M, respectively. Two more former Buffs have found new programs with DL Brandon Davis-Swain following Byard to Texas A&M and DT Jehiem Oatis heading to Ole Miss.
A former four-star recruit in the 2024 class, Davis-Swain posted 15 tackles, 1.5 sacks, one forced fumble and a pass breakup during his redshirt freshman season. He will now head to College Station to bolster a defense with hopes of winning a national title.
Oatis, on the other hand, transferred from Alabama to Colorado last spring, but it took the former top 100 recruit a while to get situated. He played in 11 games, starting the final three games, finishing the year with nine total tackles and a pass breakup. CU was banking on Oatis to make a bigger impact, but it never panned out.
The 6-foot-5, 325-pounder will now head back to the SEC, where he will reunite with Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding, who coached him during Oatis’ two seasons in Tuscaloosa.
With the eight defensive linemen Colorado has added in the transfer portal, the losses of Davis-Swain and Oatis seem easier to overcome.
