BATON ROUGE – And just like that, LSU football has now pulled two of the top rated defensive players out of the transfer portal Tuesday.

First it was Boise State safety Ty Benefield and now it’s sophomore defensive lineman Stephiylan Green from Clemson. He announced the decision via his Instagram page Tuesday. LSU’s count for players signed and/or committed out of the transfer portal is now up to six.

Lane Kiffin and his defensive staff headlined by defensive coordinator Blake Baker have zeroed in on the defensive side of the ball on day five of the portal window as Benefield and Green are the first two guys LSU has signed on defense.

Green played at Clemson the last two seasons and recorded 34 tackles with 3.5 sacks and one pass defended.

Why DL Stephiylan Green picked LSU football out of transfer portal

Continuing to play college football at a high level while finding a place where more playing time could be generated is likely what led Green to LSU.

The big 6-4, 290-pounder played in 10 games in 2025 after playing in 12 games the year prior, so he saw his playing time dip this season.

How Stephiylan Green will fit LSU football’s roster

Expectation is Green comes in and competes for playing time if not a starting role up front for Baker’s defense. Out of the transfer portal, the 247Sports Composite ranks Green as the sixth best defensive lineman.

There are holes aplenty along the defensive line for LSU and the position was one at the top of the list in terms of portal priority. Getting Green is a huge get for Kiffin, Baker and the defensive staff.

LSU football transfer targets

  • Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt
  • Penn State edge rusher Chaz Coleman
  • Kansas State wide receiver Jayce Brown
  • Florida wide receiver Eugene Wilson
  • North Carolina State wide receiver Terrell Anderson
  • California-Davis running back Carter Vargas
  • McNeese State cornerback Javon Davis
  • UAB wide receiver Iverson Hooks

When does transfer portal close?

The NCAA transfer portal window closes on Jan. 16. Players cannot enter their name in the portal following that date. But those whose name is already in the transfer portal can still decide and sign with a new school after Jan. 16.
