With O’Neill’s addition, UNC now has four quarterbacks on its roster. The others are former Wisconsin starter Billy Edwards, rising redshirt freshman Au’tori Newkirk and incoming freshman Travis Burgess. The 2026 season will be the final year of eligibility for Edwards.
O’Neill has ties to UNC through offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, who recruited him to Texas A&M when he held the same position in College Station. O’Neill said Petrino was the key factor in his decision to commit to Texas A&M in an interview with 247Sports during his senior year of high school.
“That’s a big reason why I went there,” he said during his final season of high school. “Knowing what he can do, his experience with that stuff. He’s had good quarterbacks come through, Ryan Mallett and all those guys. It’s good to know that he’s had people like this before and I can’t wait to work with him.”
He was a four-star quarterback in the class of 2024. Originally from Marblehead, Mass., O’Neill played his senior season at the Hun School of Princeton where he was the New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year after he completed 72.1% of his passes for 2,151 yards and 20 touchdowns.
